this is storm team 4's special coverage of the blizzard of 2016. >> good morning to you. you are watching special coverage of the blizzard of 2016. 9:00 a.m. you're looking right now at storm team 4 radar, our entire region blanketed with snow right now. 19 inches in tysons, 14 1/2 in laurel. send us your totals throughout the day. >> pictures coming to us through twitter and facebook. a live picture at dulles international airport where we understand all flights coming into this airport have been canceled for today the. the runways are close. as you see, the plows are doing the best they can to get the
9:01 am
airport open eventually. >> all flights canceled as well out of reagan international and bw icht. here's a picture of 95 north. we just talked to nbc's dylan dreyer. people have been listening to the warnings of first responders to stay off the roads so the crews can get ahead of the storms and do their job. >> as we show you some of the live pictures that are coming in, these are people who have experience driving in a lot of snow, maybe not quite this much. they have a lot of experience. there are few cars out there with the exception of the emergency responders, the news media who are capable of driving in this stuff. >> you know the situation. please take heed and stay off the roads. >> the reality is, the weather is not done with us just yet.
9:02 am
lauren rickets outside for us as well. >> we're seeing the upper low off the coast, what that's going to do is bring snow back around. if you woke up this morning, it wasn't snowing at your house, it will start snowing again and we'll still pick up quite a few more inches of snow, maybe even another foot in places. take a look at the radar. you can see the swath of snow all across the northeast, d.c., philadelphia, up towards new york. look at this fill in over the past hour or two. i'll zoom into this area to show you what we're looking at here. no snow down toward the northern neck. watch this. here it comes. snow making its way into fredericksburg, leonardtown, the waldorf area. looking at the heaviest snow, tonights to be up around
9:03 am
frederick, loudoun, fauquier county. d.c. is snowing at about an inch an hour. it's going to be higher as we move through the rest of the afternoon. we take a look the the activity. dark green, that's an inch an hour rate. that's northern montgomery county. frederick, that yellow, that's up weres of two inches per hour. it is still coming down. the winds, this is really good news here. we've seen winds gusting upwards of 30 miles per hour, 28 in camp springs, 46 miles an hour last hour at dulles. right now, most everybody close to 30, 40 down toward the river, the blizzard aspect may not verify. we don't want to see the wind. hopefully we don't have quite as many power outages as predicted. that would be a good thing.
9:04 am
>> it does continue to fall, doug. you know what, the point is really not that bad. the snow is the coming sideways. it's coming straight down. if you're waking up with us, i'm sure you have a lot of snow on ground. storm team 4 predictioned we would good a foot is what we have. up to about 20 inches outsued of frederick county maryland. we have people following us on twitter, thank goodness. social media. i do appreciate that. of course we appreciate that. and of course follow us on twitter, facebook and all sorts of social media. we'll be on all day and working for you. download our app. you don't want to get stuck not having cable, not having us, if
9:05 am
you download our washington app, we'll be right there for you. >> the snow tonights to fall. it may pick up over the next couple of hours. the blizzard warning remains in effect until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. winter storm warning back to the west. we still have a long way to go. i want you to make sure this will continue most likely through at least 6:00 tonight as far as the heaviest snow. so between now and 6:00 is really when we'll continue to tear into these snow totals. >> i'm angie goff at the live desk. breaking news. we have water breaking through the dunes and flooding the streets of ocean city. i want to bring in mayor rick meehan of ocean city to update us on the latest. mayor meehan, what's happening right now? is this something you anticipated? >> yes. this is pretty much what we anticipated. we knew this was going to be a
9:06 am
wind and water event for us. we have very little, if any snow. it's really changed to rain. the ocean is pretty angry out there. it is coming up to the dune. we don't have water actually in the streets. we do have water down at the inlet at the very south end of town on the inlet parking lot, which is typical. that has flooded. and along the boardwalk you'll see splashover and sea foam and sand. that's the extent of it. we're probably in the height of the storm at this moment. >> we are seeing remarkable pictures pop up on social media. that must be the area you're talking about where it's showing where the snow and the ice are meeting, that tidal flooding. you see pieces of the ice in the high water. what is your main area of concern at this point? the bridges? what's at risk?
9:07 am
>> our bridges are fine. it's a water event for us. the thing that concerns us the most is the ocean front. we know we'll get scouring of our dunes and washover on the boardwalk. we know the inlet parking lot will flood. those dunes are there to protect the property. they're doing their jobs. it's on the bay side where we're going through a high tide cycle. we're concerned about some of the properties along the bay front and some of the flooding that we could possibly see along the way yont. right now what we see out along with first runs through town is we have signs blown out, some signs down. light polls down, railing, fencing, those type of things that we don't typically see with storms like this with sustained winds from 30 to 40 miles on
9:08 am
hour. ocean city rick meehan bringing us up to date. >> thank you. we've been hearing this message throughout the week as we prepare you for this blizzard. stay at home, especially on the roads. we want the first responders to be able to do their jobs. >> almost 16 inches of snow has fallen at dulles. that's where we find news 4's adam tuss. we know he's a jet setter. >> i was just going to say, are you ready for more bad jokes? aaron's private jet is grounded today. you beat me to it. >> the two of you can have -- >> listen. >> you can have a face-off.
9:09 am
>> we'll see, we'll see, eun. let me show you what's happening right here. we have the winds kicking up at dulles airport. it's blowing snow all over the place. the flights here at dulles aren't taking off. is let's get to serious business. a lot of the operations were ramming up yesterday. no airline wants their airplane sitting on the runway when there's a storm like this blowing through. what they do, they take their airplanes and they move it somewhere elsewhere the weather isn't so much of a factor. today, dulles, dca, dwi, there are no flights getting in or out. i will tell you, tomorrow, once everything settles down, there may be no crews in our region that are more prepared to handle
9:10 am
this stuff than airport crews. they've got all sorts of ridiculous and cool equipment. when the sun comes out tomorrow, they'll work at a furious pace to get all of the runways back open. it will take some time burt he'll see flights reposition. i think it will be a couple days before the flight pattern gets back to where the way it was. if you have a flight on monday, you may still get out on monday, maybe not as early as you thought. a lot of people made the unfortunate mistake if you're familiar with this airport, there's that parking bowl in between the main terminal. their cars are covered in snow
9:11 am
and there's no telling how long it will take to dig out from that. you might be coming home from a destination where you were tropical, enjoying a nice drink, your car might be stuck here. if you have a relative this way, i'd ask them to come out here and dig your car out for you. if not, call aaron. >> you wait. i will be there. you won't have any trouble "p." >> i will say this, eun, chivalry is not dead. it's not dead. okay? >> it's not. robert walked me out to the main street with my bags. the snow was so deep at one point, the bottom of my house there's a stoop and stair. i fell into the sidewalk. >> you fell?
9:12 am
>> i fell in? >> are there picks? >> no. >> what does is robert if he didn't take pictures? he helped you out. >> yes, he helped me out. >> tell him to take a picture first. since 5:00 a.m., the snow total has gone from 10 inches to 19 inches. julie carey has been tracking it all for you. what are you seeing right now? >> here it is. this is what it looks like, 19 inches, apparently knee deep on me. it's still coming down hard. boy, you just missed the ending of a snow drama in real life. route 7 and spring hill road. see that fly back there behind me. that's been stuck there now for more an an hour. he's been trying to shovel and break free.
9:13 am
no look yet. because of that vdot plow, they have been getting snagged. a couple in the white vehicle, they've been trying to make the turn on to spring hill turn. that's when you get in trouble. they were hung up interestingly another driver who was out and about and shouldn't have been came to their aid and he was able to give them instructions to break that car free. here's what he had to say. >> i was just out here taking pictures, i'm a photographer. i got stuck in the snow. a couple people stopped,. >> are you going back home?
9:14 am
>> absolutely. he said he's going back home to warm chinese food and a bottle of rum. also after he got them out, the fairfax county fire truck did arrive. they were trying to respond to another call. david culver was telling us about that yesterday. when i come back later in the hour. >> i stopped listening after she said warm chinese food and a bottle of rum. >> isn't that sound good. >> there were a lot of people who had the same idea. >> the lady behind me at the grocery store had ten bottles of wine the last time i checked. thank you, julie. >> i didn't buy anything.
9:15 am
>> let's show you video. this is time lapsed stuff of the snow as it piled up outside. here we go. there you see it right there. we have pot collins -- the snow stick. >> out there on the patio. look at that. you can see it climbing up over the course of a couple hours it's not done. it's still out there. >> you can have a snowstorm or pat collins without our trusty sn snow forecaster. he is the best, best, best, pat collins. >> i'm pat collins, your human weather station. >> yes! >> here we are at connecticut street. this is a doozy. take a look at connecticut

connecticut and president and it's still coming down. this is the official pat collins snow stick. today we'll have a snow stick challenge. this will be a chance to get one of these on your very own. in a half hour, i'll tell you what that challenge is beginning to be. eun, aaron, how is it back in the studio? >> it's pretty good. we're warm, we're comfortable. >> it's really not bad out here. you shun go out. it's sort of pretty out here. it really is. >> you're a professional. we know you're prepared. you're not going out there without your stuff. >> i have more layers than a smythe eye lant cake.
9:18 am
it took me 35 minutes with help from my wife to get dressed this morning. if i fall over, i wone feel it for about two hours. >> you look good, pat. >> you feel like a hockey goalie. >> you look good. i'll be back. you don't have to be in it to win it. the challenge comes up in about a half hour. you don't have to be in it to win it. >> smith island cake by the way is my favorite. it's a maryland classic and it's 17 lasers. >> 9:18. we said it over and over again, do not drive in this weather. >> scott macfarlane spotted a police cruiser that couldn't go in germantown.
9:19 am
scott, what happened? it got caught turning into a parking lot. that type of snow. we're near state route 118. what montgomery county considers an emergency and primary road, which means it's a priority. they have seva lot of equipment. it's near fire, police department and a hospital. police have been getting stuck. plows are getting stuck. this is the first time i've been able to take off the snow goggles. it's all relevant live but i emphasize, it's all relative. generally speaking, the roads are empty. those that are walking are walking right on the state road. it's really the only passable

9:21 am
there. >> i'm thinking this is something different. you mentioned to us yesterday morning when we spoke during news 4 today you are plowing the major roads and doing these neighborhoods at the same time. >> yes. especially when we're looking at this much snow, a flood or two or more of snow. they cannot hit that height of snow. they need to push a few inches at a time. we need to get that off the road a little bit of a time ka within can manage the snowfall. smats something people have complianced about year after year, how long is it going to get for them to get to my neighborhood? >> we have plowed and staged our trucks and subdivisions from the
9:22 am
beginning of the storm for the last four or five years or so. it does generally take longer to get to the sub defensive streets. roughly half of our roads in northern virginia are neighborhood streets. we have 16,000 neighborhood streets. it does take a while. usually we're done with the interstate and primary first base on that, then we can redistrict the trucks a little bit. it's 4,000 trucked based on what we wering. northern virginia continues to keep at it. until this snow stops falling, we won't really start to see some of the relief, the bare pavement that's going to stick around. >> we know our viewers and your residents are going to be asking, the crews are working around the clock.
9:23 am
is there any time line where they can expect to get out of their homes? >> well, the goal for a storm like this, our general goal will be 48 hours from the end of the storm to have all of them passable. it won't be bare pavement. clearly with this storm, this much snow, we'll have snow piled on the side of the road. crews will have to take some time to go back and recontribute snow, just to make sure we don't have cc issues with piled up snow. our goal is 48 hours, within the end of the store. the main message we want for drivers is the rest of the day-to-day, especially while the
9:24 am
snow is falling they will not be desirable to be driving on. they're still going to be dangerous. >> allen came across a plow that had been broken down. are you running into problems with your equipment, anything that's slowing down your operation? >> with heavy equipment or machinery, you have break downs. especially with crews that are working 12-hour shifts around the clock. by the end of that storm, that machinery may have some break downs. that is not atypical. when we have so many trucks out, we know we are so many other trucks to keep going. that's not unusual to have break

here and well. the drivers are working 12-hour shifts. there's a lot of work going on out there and everyone is treeping at it to try to get the roads clear. >> the best to the cruise woewsg out there. >> some of you may be heading out to do some shoveling. >> good luck with that. we do know, derrick, we suggested going out periodically so that you're not pushing and shoveling all at once. >> indeed. it is kind of heavy. what we're seeing now, there's a car stuck at that intersection. that's why it's deceptive here. there are cars that moving brute it's when you lose momentum that you run into trouble. i think a front-wheel drive
